Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, and Nils Grandelius grab the lead in the Tata Steel Chess tournament after the first round.
Carlsen defeated Firouzja in what the world champion called a "typical first-round game, thinking too much and miscalculating". Giri won against one of the younger participants 21-year-old Tari, and the third early leader Grandelius defeated Donchenko, the last-minute replacement of Dubov who could not make it to Wijk aan Zee.
