???? The oldest textbook on the game of chess, published in Turin in 1597, was digitized from the local Historical Library and published online. “The book, which talks about the manner of playing chess,” is now available on the website of the administration of the Italian city, Trend reports with reference to TASS.
The agency specifies that this volume, one of 200 of the 16th century kept in Turin, was compiled by the Italian chess player Orazio Gianuzio Della Mantia (c. 1550-1610). The 128 pages are richly decorated with drawings and contain an introduction and three chapters. In the first, the author writes about the calming and pacifying effects of chess.
The work of Della Mantia, a military leader from an aristocratic family who served the Austrian Duchy and then the Savoy, is considered the oldest in Italy in terms of the theory of chess. This book is a rare exhibit that is now available to all chess lovers.
