Friedrich Samisch - Ernst Grunfeld, Carlsbad 1929

German chess player, an important contributor to the opening theory, Friedrich Sämisch was born on 20 September 1896. He was among the inaugural recipients of the title International Grandmaster from FIDE in 1950.

Despite his most famous game being a loss against Nimzowitsch in 1923 (it went down in history as the "Immortal Zugzwang Game"), he was a master of creating beauty too. His game against Ernst Grünfeld at Carlsbad 1929 won the tournament's brilliancy prize.
