A month before his death, former world champion Tal sneaked out of hospital to play in the Moscow blitz championship.
He stunned the playing hall by defeating reigning world champion Kasparov, whose flag fell in a complicated position.
Tal's death apparently triggered Fischer to agree to make a comeback later that year in an illegal match against his old foe Spassky.
