In this famous chess picture, 8-year-old Samuel Reshevsky is giving a simultaneous exhibition in France in 1920. The same year Polish prodigy would emigrate to the United States and become one of the strongest American grandmasters, a contender for the world championship. In the 1948 World Chess Championship tournament he tied for third, and in the famous 1953 Candidates Tournament he tied for second.

Although Reshevsky was never a full-time professional chess player and even stopped playing for 7 years while getting his education as an accountant - the profession that put bread on his family's table - his results were outstanding. An 8-time winner of the US Chess Championship, he shares this record with Bobby Fischer.

He was born on November 26, 1911 - exactly 109 years ago.
