1979 Tournament of The Stars
ON THIS DAY: World Champion Anatoly Karpov and world number two and former world champion Mikhail Tal topped the very strong category XV tournament (the strongest at the time) held in Quebec Pavillion on Notre Dame Island in the Saint Lawrence River, City of Montreal from April-May 6, 1979.
Dubbed "The Tournament of the Stars" Karpov and Tal scored an identical 12 points in the 10-player double roundrobin event over the participants that icluded former world champion Boris Spassky and top grandmasters Lajos Portisch, Bent Larsen, Jan Timman, Vlastimil Hort, Robert Hübner, Lubomir Kavalek and Ljubomir Ljubojević. Tal was undefeated (6wins 12draws) and Karpov suffered a single loss over Larsen but tied the lead after a win versus Ljubojevic and propelled him with more wins (7wins 10draws) to share first place.
